Domestication (from Latin domesticus) is the process whereby a population of living organisms is changed at the genetic level, through generations of selective breeding, to accentuate traits that ultimately benefit humans. A usual by-product of domestication is the creation of a dependency in the domesticated organisms, so that they lose their ability to live in the wild. It differs from taming in that a change in the phenotypical expression and genotype of the animal occurs, whereas taming is simply an environmental socialization/behavioral trait; the process by which animals become accustomed to human presence. In the Convention on Biological Diversity, a domesticated species is defined as a "species in which the evolutionary process has been influenced by humans to meet their needs." Therefore, a defining characteristic of domestication is artificial selection by humans. Humans have brought these populations under their control and care for a wide range of reasons: to produce food or valuable commodities (such as wool, cotton, or silk) and for types of work (such as transportation, protection, warfare), scientific research, or simply to enjoy as companions or ornaments.
Over the years I have read many accounts of animal intelligence.
Working in a veterinary hospital, I do see my fill of people refusing treatment or care for their pets because: "It's just a farm dog" or "It's just a cat."
There are many days that statements like these really bug me.
Being a scientific minded person, I have sought to find a way that we can understand how animals think and communicate through books and shows, etc. What I have read and what I have experienced leads me to believe that animals are much more intelligent and capable of thought and feeling than many give them credit for.
Some may argue that the use of tools is what separates us from our animal ancestry - however I've seen the footage of chimpanzees useing sticks to get termites out of mounds for food.
Well, a few nights ago, Sean and I saw Macu our Bronze Wing Pionus playing with her toy bottle cap (I swear, I've bought her way more expensive toys, but she looooves plastic bottle caps from sodas). Then we noticed that she was using the toy as a tool to scratch the places on her head she can't normally reach with her foot.
Not only was it amazing, but adorable!
So take that all you people who think that animals can't think or don't have intelligence!
I caught a picture of her here doing it, but she hates the camera and dropped the bottle cap the minute the flash went off.It looks to me like he has been tought to "copy" this image. but hey, you can see he is particular about his line, and goes over them twice to correct faded colour and such..
So the elephant is clearly interested in "getting it right".
My 7 year old and I watched this clip, just before she went to school. It saddens me to think that if she tells in school that "elephants can paint pictures of elephants" she will be told that it isn't true,- and that no animal can paint..- It wouldnt be the first time that what she learns here at home is completely negated in school..
It pains me to send her to school at all Best information on animal totems isn't (in my biased view) from so called "new age" sources, but biology books, animal histories, and your own observations.
Animals as teachers work (again, in my personal opinion, not academic opinion) because they make us look at ourselves in particular ways. not unlike archetypes, zodiacs, etc. If i tell someone who *isn't* acting in a traditionally cancer manner, that he or she is a cancer, he or she might then see where in their lives, they are pushing those aspects of their world aside. I'm sure if i looked, I could find aspects of all 12 zodiacs in me, and could "nurture them".
So, when I work with groups of people trying to get in touch with their inner totems, i really ask them to open up their imaginations, and see what comes to them. Prior to the group meeting, i've filled the "space" with pictures of animals, books and mags about animals (and not just 'cool' ones like cats, bears, snakes, but also crabs, lobsters, fleas, larva) which stimulates their subconscious.
I also keep carvings of animals around, so people can pick them up without noticing they are doing it.
Then, we do dream or guided meditations, and try to let the subconscious help guide in whatever they've seen or touched that resonates with them.
then we read about our animals for a half our or so, and talk with small groups about what we found. things we needed to learn, reasons why this or that animal would be "guiding" us at this point in our life.
